Open Day of the Institute of Astronomy of the CAS
Czech Academy of Sciences open day
Three departments of the Academy of Sciences are opening their doors in the Spořilov Science Campus: the Institute of Geophysics, the Institute of Atmospheric Physics and the Institute of Astronomy. You will learn about their scientific activities, there is a competition for children and a children’s corner. You will be able to use telescopes to look at the Sun or at terrestrial objects (depending on the weather, especially without rain) and meet scientists who are actually exploring the universe.
Detailed programme at our Department of Galaxies:
- – observation with binoculars on the terrace: the sun or, in case of cloudy skies, terrestrial objects (not observed in rain)
- – a model of the X-ray satellite Athena, in which our scientists are involved, with an interpretation (on the stairs, 1st floor)
- – self-service stop with ESO – European Southern Observatory (on the stairs, 2nd floor)
- – astroquiz of our young scientists from different parts of the world (3rd floor)
- – promotional items for you
- – children’s programme: workshop with stargazers
- – a discovery trail for children across the three institutes, with two stations at our site – the Athena X-ray satellite and the European Southern Observatory (prizes are ready)
Especially for children:
- – 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. – children’s corner with astronomical themes and competition Trail across the Academy of Sciences
An escape room with an astronomical theme:
As part of the Open Day at our Prague office, we have prepared an escape room style game with an astronomical theme, where you will test your deductive reasoning, knowledge and ability to work together. It is recommended for ages 12 and up, preferably for teams of two to five (active) participants. If you are interested, email your preferred time, we will get in touch if it is free – http://galaxy.asu.cas.cz/page/escape-room. The Escape Room will take approximately 45 minutes. Young children will probably be bored, but you can sit them on the couch – in which case bring toys along. Dates are available on Friday, November 8, 2024 between 6pm and 9pm, and Saturday, November 9, 2024 between 10am and 4pm. We look forward to seeing you there.
