Black holes in the crosshairs of space missions

Two major missions planned by the European Space Agency (ESA), ATHENA and LISA, will focus on supermassive black holes at the centres of galaxies. How can we study these black holes and what can we learn about them? Will we be involved in new discoveries as these space missions begin their first measurements in space?
