Astronomy is the science that deals with the study of celestial bodies, processes in the universe and the universe as a whole. But does the study of celestial phenomena bring any purely practical benefit to society? The answer may come as a surprise – we encounter many of the original astronomical technologies that have literally reached our pockets on a daily basis, and often do not even realise that we owe them to astronomy.
